Project Description
Rizzo quay’s platforms, in the Harbour of Messina, are not very extended and they’re often loaded down more than they’re originally projected to be. For these reasons, the concerned area is affected by diffused failures and the punching actions developed several localized deformations.
The proposed project detects the failures causes and suggests the interventions of safeguarding and rehabilitation, for the quay portion where overloads developed deep deformations and for the one where the platform surface is only damaged.
The proposed interventions are differentiated in reference to the type of problem and the detected causes.
During the first phase of the service, HIPRO’s staff has been involved in many site visits and investigations, necessaries to carry out the collection data and observe the most distinctive parameters of the materials and of the ground. The parameters values have been the input information in the analysis and calculations.
The most important type of interventions (interventions 1) has been related to the structural consolidation of the quay portion (1000 m²) with deep failures. In this area, the elected solution consists in: scrapping of the whole quay, rehabilitation of the ground foundation, reinforced by interposition of a stratum of lime stabilized gravel subbase, ground compaction and realization of a reinforced concrete plate.
The interventions 2 consists in the rehabilitation of the many cracks and lesions on the quay platforms (1100 m²). In this area, the first phase of the intervention consists in the scrubbing of the reinforced concrete plate on the platform surface. The deeper lesions will be compensated, after stripping and washing themselves. The plate will be reconstructed with a fiber-reinforced concrete and its surface will be fully refined.
The interventions 3 consists in the rehabilitation of the milder lesions and micro-cracks by scrubbing a 10 mm thick stratum of the plate. The plate will be reconstructed and its surface will be fully refined.
